Why Less is More for Your Child’s Skin

Why Less is More for Your Child’s Skin

As a parent, I know that when your child has a skin rash, you just want it gone…fast! It’s completely natural to want to try every cream, lotion, or remedy you can find.

But I’ve learned that less is more when it comes to sensitive skin. This all came from my experience as a mom, hair stylist, and founder of NAPRIM Naturals. Let’s talk about why dialing it back might actually be the best thing you can do!

Look for Fewer Ingredients

When picking out products for your child’s rash, stick to items with fewer ingredients. Seriously, less is more here. Focus on things you can actually pronounce: simple, natural ingredients that won’t overwhelm their skin. The last thing you want to do is slather on 50 different products and hope one of them works.

What I see a lot with parents is they try everything at once—understandably! You just want to fix it for your kid. But using too many products is like having too many cooks in the kitchen. It can be hard to tell what’s actually working or if the products are interacting in ways they shouldn’t. Simplify. Stick to one thing at a time and give it space to do its job.

Apply When Skin is Moist

Here’s a game changer: always apply products to moist skin. Whether it’s lotion, cream, or powder, it works best right after a bath or shower when the skin is damp. When the skin is hydrated, it absorbs everything more effectively.

Those heavier ointments, like Vaseline and Aquaphor, create a barrier, which is great for keeping bacteria out, but they just sit on the surface. They don’t do much to actually repair the skin barrier underneath. It’s like putting a band-aid over the problem instead of getting to the root of it.

This is where the Nourishing Powder we created at NAPRIM Naturals shines. The ingredients we use are designed to hydrate, repair, and get into the skin to actually fix the underlying issue. Unlike typical lotions or creams that only coat the surface, our powder works deeper, targeting the skin’s barrier to heal it from within.

The Trouble with Steroid Creams

Another thing I want to touch on is topical steroid creams. Now, I know these are often what’s prescribed, but long-term use can lead to Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW). What happens is, over time, your child’s skin can become immune to the steroids, and when you stop using them, their skin can flare up and get even worse. It’s almost as if their skin goes into withdrawal. This is something I wasn’t aware of for a long time, and I imagine a lot of other parents aren’t told either.

The frustrating part? These creams are often given without any allergy testing or asking about things like detergents, irritants, or even your child’s diet—factors that could be causing the rash in the first place. That’s why I’m such a believer in holistic healthcare.

Personally, I love working with holistic practitioners because they don’t just prescribe a cream to treat the problem. They ask questions. They look at the bigger picture—your environment, your child’s diet, what kind of detergents you’re using, and more. They aim to get to the root of the issue, not just mask it.

At the end of the day, everything we need to heal can be found in nature. That’s the philosophy behind NAPRIM Naturals. We’re here to offer gentle, effective products that work with your skin, not against it.

Less is More for Your Child’s Skin

So, the next time your child has a rash, remember: less is more. Choose simple, natural products with fewer ingredients, apply them to moist skin, and give them time to work. And if you can, seek out a holistic approach to help get to the root cause.
